DEAR CONFLICTED (ABOUT THE ELECTION),
I’m not here to tell you who to vote for.
This is not one of those articles, there are enough of those to last a lifetime from this election alone, but instead, I wanted to give you some thoughts and advice amidst your inner conflict.
You are conflicted.
You haven’t decided which candidate to vote for. You are unsure what is the “right” decision.
Let me just stop you there and tell you that you are not alone.
I have talked to many people who are undecided. So how do we come around to making our decision?
Here are some things that have helped me clear my head amidst the hundreds of opinions flying at me and around me:
KEEP AN OPEN MIND: It is easier to let others think for you than to think for yourself. Just because you are a Christian doesn’t mean you have to vote for a republican or whom “all the other Christians are voting for” and vise versa. Don’t vote for someone just because that’s whom your parents, spouse, or friends are voting for. Try taking a step back and looking at the candidates from your own eyes with an open mind to what they are both saying. Do some introspection and form your own opinion. God gave us two tools to use while making decisions, a head and a heart. They go together. To use just one over the other can leave you very unbalanced.
REALIZE THAT THESE CANDIDATES ARE NOT YOUR SAVIORS: They will not fix every single one of your problems and the world’s. To put that kind of pressure on candidates is unfair to yourselves and them. There is only one Savior and He is not a candidate in this election.
REALIZE THAT GOD IS IN CONTROL: I think a lot of our fear of one person getting elected over the other says a lot about how much we trust God. Whether or not your selected candidate gets elected, God is in control.
RESPECT OTHERS: Remember to be respectful to those who don’t share your opinion. This is a vital quality that goes beyond this election.
Conflicted, I wish you the best while you make your decision. It’s not easy, I know, but hang in there. There is going to be times where you aren’t 100% positive you are making the right decision but that’s normal. Remember, you are not alone, to keep an open mind, they are not your saviors, and that God is in control.
Sincerely,
Jenny Fedun
